Evelyn B. Morgan
Fund Type: Family SupportNewport News, VA
Evelyn Banks Morgan, 68, passed away on April 12, 2019. A life long resident of Newport News, she was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and older brother; however, she leaves behind a son, two daughters, stepchildren, 12 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren to carry on her legacy of warm-heartedness and generosity.
Many in the community might have crossed paths with Evelyn when she was a long-time employee at the Farm Fresh on Coliseum Drive. Her family teases that she was known as 'Miss Farm Fresh' and always had a smile or kind word for her customers. When not working, she could often be found playing BINGO at the Chestnut Hall in Newport News. Evelyn also loved crossword puzzles and card games. She was a competitive player and her granddaughter remembers playing Spades and receiving no mercy at all, laughing at how her grandmother delighted in winning at games.
Evelyn was raised in the House of Prayer and, though not affiliated with a specific church, would hold Bible studies in her home for friends. She also loved having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to her home where she would let them eat cookies and cheese doodles as her way of 'spoiling' them.
Her family remembers Evelyn as a woman who loved good eating and laughing. Her son Antonio says she was his 'little lady' and a queen among women. Her daughters Tiana and Faith remember her as being feisty, selfless, and small but mighty. You could often find her singing along or dancing to Sam Smith or Patti LaBelle. As she got older, she became more of a home body because her family was the center of her world and she wanted them close to her. She hosted her family for regular meals as well as holidays. She was known as a stern but fair force of nature who would often act as a peacemaker when needed.
Her children Faith, Tiana, and Antonio are devastated by the sudden loss of the matriarch of their family. In addition to the costs associated with their mother's homegoing service, their mother leaves behind medical and personal debt. We are coming together as a community to try and assist the family in their time of need to support them as well as recognize what a special woman Evelyn truly was. Any amount that you can donate would go a long way in helping ease this family's heartache.
