Cameron Art Museum in Memory of Mary Manning

Fund Type: Memorial Donations

Wilmington, NC

Cameron Art Museum was a special place for Mary.

Cameron Art Museum became a “home” for a sketch of Mary, “Mary Alice Kerr-13”
done by Claude Howell in 1944. Mary’s grandmother lived on 2nd Street in Wilmington,
NC (Belcher-Oldham home) and her family was active in downtown Wilmington. When
Mary’s parents bought a farm, they remained active in downtown markets. Mary loved
growing flowers and selling in the market. That is were Claude Howell pulled out his
pad and sketched her one day in 1944. With her mother’s permission and watchful eye,
he asked young Mary to sit atop the flower counter and then asked her to sign her name
and age to the sketch, which he also signed. It was like an agreement they made that
many years later would reveal itself. Mary’s last excursion out of her home was to visit
the Cameron Art Museum, and she had the thrill to see the charcoal sketch portrait of
herself displayed on the wall there.
