Saluda Public Library In Loving Memory of Juan Carol Montondo Dickinson

Fund Type: Memorial Donations

Saluda, NC

Juan was a voracious reader, completing about 5 books week. She was extremely grateful to the Saluda Public Library for their support and consideration when she became unable to visit the library herself. Please consider a donation in her memory.

Juan Carol Montondo Dickinson (6/7/1930 ' 7/2/2018) went to be with her beloved husband Paul, surrounded by her girls. As a Mother, she had an amazing impact upon her children, including her four natural daughters and 13 others (foster children, nieces, and exchange students) that she welcomed into her home, because she always had more love to give.  She is survived by her four daughters Cindy Anderson (and Dieter Engelke) of Santa Fe, NM, Debbie Trimmer (and Ray) of Los Alamos, NM, Amy Cross (and Larry) of Spencerport, NY, and Paula Witt (and Kerry) of Saluda, NC, and 5 grandchildren[Maggie Anderson, Gary Cross, Jason Trimmer (and Michelle Carter), Jesse Cross (and Tatiana), and David Trimmer, and grandchildren David (and Tasha)Witt, Ryan DeLong, and Allison Holland, and great grandchildren Evan and Tristan Cross, Emma Carter, and Mason Witt. Throughout her life Juan also had many other roles, including payroll clerk at Eastman Kodak, Girl Scout leader, 'Mother Nature' at summer camp, fabric saleswoman, real estate agent, and choir director at the Methodist church in Pultneyville, NY.

Born in Rochester, NY, Juan lived there with her husband and family until Paul retired, at which time they relocated to the mountains of western North Carolina.  They loved to pack a picnic lunch and 'get lost' one day a week as they explored their new home.  They joined the local Methodist church where they became involved in the choir, and made many new friends as Juan and Paul both pursued their interests in local crafts. Juan was an extremely creative  woman, who pursued interests in knitting, crocheting, sewing, weaving, painting (oils, acrylics, pastels and water colors), quilting, flower arranging, chair caning, basket weaving, upholstery, beading, wreath making, copper enameling, spinning and dyeing wool with natural dye materials.

In 1984, Juan was accepted as a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild for weaving and spinning, and she actively demonstrated and shared her skill with school children and her daughters, sparking an interest in the old skills.  Seemingly, her hands were always busy, except when reading. She voraciously completed about 5 books week and was extremely grateful to the Saluda Public Library for their support and consideration when she became unable to visit the library herself.

For the past 3 years Juan was a resident of Saluda, NC, where she resided with her daughter Paula Witt and son-in-law Kerry Witt.  She was an active member of the Saluda United Methodist Church, where she sang alto (or tenor) with the choir.  She loved the people, the local culture, and the beauty of the western North Carolina mountains.  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
