Dies at 81 years of age

Charles Perry Vaughan, 81, of Cashie Street, Lewiston-Woodville, died on Monday, June 7, 2021, at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, NC.

Charles loved his early years in the Woodville community with his grandparents who reared him.

He married Dayle Joyner at the age of 21. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage in their hometown involving themselves in the church and community.

Charles joined First Baptist Church at an early age. Over the years he was a faithful member serving as a Deacon (chairman for many years), Brotherhood President, Adult Sunday School Director, member of the Adult Men's Sunday School Class and choir member. Charles and Dayle devoted much of their time with the youth-working with them, loving them, and carrying them many miles on the church bus. Later Charles and Dayle joined Menola Baptist Church participating in many activities.

Charles served as a Town Commissioner and Mayor of Lewiston. He served as the first mayor of the consolidated towns of Lewiston and Woodville for 18 years. Charles and Dayle co-chaired the centennial committee in 1981 and have fond memories of that special time. Charles was a member of Lewiston-Woodville Fire Department and served as President for over 20 years. He was a volunteer fireman for over 45 years. He was also a member of Davie Lodge #39.
