John Vassilagoris Memorial Fund
Fund Type: Family SupportNew Port Richey, FL
Fundraiser ends on January 08, 2020
John “Yiannis” Vassilagoris, 59, passed away December 6, 2019 after a 5-year long battle with cancer. John was born in Greece to Konstandinos and Ioanna Vassilagoris on December 6, 1959, though it was recorded as the 7th. He became a ship captain and came to the USA in 1984 as a Merchant Marine, making trips around the globe by sea. He was married to the love of his life, Joanna Panopoulos, for over 30 years. He became a custom home builder and built homes throughout the Tampa Bay area until he couldn’t work any longer.
John loved to travel. He took his family on adventures all over the world to places like Egypt, France, Africa, and China. They traveled the entirety of the lower 48, aside from only 5 states, by motor coach. He also loved to read. History, philosophy, mythology, and world religions were some of his favorite subjects to learn about. He had a brilliant mind. John enjoyed the finer things like opera and the ballet but could appreciate the simplest of pleasures like a good Western movie. He was a big fan of the Milwaukee Bucks and followed soccer and tennis as well.
Family was the most important thing to John. He wanted to make sure that his family was always taken care of. Spending time with his family, whether it was having a meal or taking a trip, was what he loved to do above all else. The warmth of his presence will be so sorely missed by those he loved.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Joanna Panopoulos; his daughter, Sophia Vassilagoris and her husband Dr. Nicholas Zoumberous; his grandchildren, Anestis and John; and countless dear family members and friends, both here and abroad.
John’s passing has devastated his family, his wife Joanna especially. They’ve been together for over 30 years. This tragedy is going to be a very difficult time of adjustment for his family. If you would like to show your love and support to them during this time of sorrow, please make a contribution to this memorial fund. It is the best way to help them through this terrible loss. Thank you so much for your kindness.
Services for John will be private. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to his memorial fund.
