Thomas Richard Moats, 78, of Buckhannon, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 21, 2023, at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport.

He was born in Lost Creek on March 4, 1945, a son of the late Roy Butcher and Mildred Moana Moats Adleman. In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by two children: Tommy Moats and Belinda Moats; two sisters: Esta Mae Dunn and Betty Lee Sanford; two brothers: Dana Moats and Kenneth Shoulders; two nephews: Timmy and Danny Goldsmith; one great-nephew, Danny Goldsmith Jr.; and many aunts and uncles.

Thomas is survived by four children: Dalia Castillo, Melissa Garcia, Richard Moats, and Robert Moats; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three siblings: Garnett Downy, Roy Moats, and Sandra Peters; and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas was a man of many accomplishments and interests. He proudly served his country as a United States Air Force Veteran, a testament to his courage and dedication. After his military service, he took to the open road as an over-the-road trucker, working for various companies before becoming self-employed. A true West Virginian at heart, he spent his leisure time cruising the backroads of his beloved home state. Thomas was an avid fisherman and collector, always on the lookout for a new addition to his trove. He loved spending time with family and friends, often sitting around a fire, sharing stories and making memories. A sociable and friendly man, Thomas never knew a stranger, and his warm presence will be greatly missed.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at Pat Boyle Funeral Home and Cremation Service located at 144 Hackers Creek Rd. in Jane Lew from 12-1 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2023. Funeral Services will begin at 1 p.m. in the Pat Boyle Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Wease Day officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Jane Lew.
