Veterans Healing Farm Flood Recovery

The Veterans Healing Farm, a place to help veterans back into a happy and well-balanced life, has saved so many. Because the flood waters are causing so much damage, the farm needs your help, now more than ever.

Veterans Healing Farm exists to serve our nation's veterans by growing and donating high-quality fruits, vegetables, and flower bouquets to veterans and their caregivers free of charge. Additionally, we support veterans by offering workshops on innovative gardening techniques and by fostering a thriving micro-community of veterans and civilians who build deep friendships and cultivate emotional, physical, and spiritual health.

John Mahshie’s goals lie between the rows. The former U.S. Airman founded Veterans Healing Farm in Hendersonville with his wife, administrative coordinator Nicole Mahshie. Helped by a corps of volunteers, the couple donates thousands of pounds of produce each season to area veterans through a central location: the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville. The Mahshies, who have two young daughters and an infant son, also oversaw a building project on the grounds. Two shipping containers have been converted into a residential outpost so that John and Nicole can teach other veterans to replicate the nonprofit program across the country.

When asked, “You’re always diversifying your crops. What did you grow this season?" John replies, "Everything that you can grow here in Henderson County, we grew. Tons of heirloom-variety tomatoes, nutrient-dense food … in addition to the produce and the kale and the lettuce.  The flowers were huge. We did 30 varieties of regular flowers and 30 varieties of sunflowers. Our medicinal herb garden expanded this year. We’re training veterans on how to use herbs to make medicines."

Now, unfortunately, the Veterans Healing Farm has been under siege from flooding. As you can tell from the video, there is a lot of damage, and this was taken on the very first day of what became a full week of the same conditions.

Please donate to help continue John's dream of reaching out to our veterans. You can use a credit or debit card to donate on this site or send a check made out to Veterans Healing Farm to Shuler Funeral Home, 125 Orr's Camp Rd., Hendersonville, NC 28792.
